Epiphytes These are plants that make their homes on other plants or trees. Their habitat is a dynamic one—they sway in the breeze, experience rainstorms, and usually live in the dappled light under larger plants.
Epiphytes have evolved to take up nutrients and moisture from the air, rain and compost found in the forest canopy instead of using roots to extract these necessities from soil. For epiphytes, their roots are used primarily as an anchor.
Examples are found in many diverse environments, from deserts to tropical rainforests, even under the sea!
In the cafe, we have started a mounted-epiphyte corner so that you may enjoy these unique plants and on Saturday, April 27th from 9:30 - 11 we will teach you how to mount your own on cork bark. The class is limited to ten people, $35 a person and will include all the supplies needed to make your own mounted epiphyte.
